The American company Lockheed Martin has contracted with NASA's aerospace agency to develop, construct and conduct flight tests of a supersonic demonstrator with a low intensity of sound impact, the manufacturer said . The first flight is scheduled for 2021, previously it was planned for 2019 with acceptance tests in 2020. The speed of the demonstrator will be more than 1.4M .
The contract amount is 247.5 million dollars, writes Aviation Week. The project is designed to translate into reality supersonic passenger transportation. The work will be carried out in the division of Skunk Works, which specializes in promising developments.
Specialists Skunk Works must build a full-sized experimental aircraft, called the X-plane. The basis will be taken by a sketch design of NASA Silent supersonic technology (QueSST). A new aircraft allows NASA to establish an acceptable standard of sound impact for commercial traffic. This should change the situation related to the ban on such flights over land.
NASA has been cooperating with Lockheed Martin for more than a decade on the design of a supersonic aircraft. In February 2016, they signed an agreement on the preliminary design of the demonstrator X-plane .
