German companies Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines have started the creation of a joint venture (JV) for maintenance and repair of Pratt & Whitney PW1000G family of gearbox turbofan engines . The joint venture, which will be called Engine Maintenance Europe (EME Aero), will begin operations in 2020 and will be based in Poland. This is stated in the joint report of the companies.
The joint venture in Poland will be created on a parity basis. Investments in the company by 2020 are expected at the level of 150 million euros. The number of EME Aero employees will be up to 800 technical specialists and administrative personnel. It is expected that the joint venture will annually conduct more than 400 engine maintenance procedures. The fact that Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines will join forces to service the PW1000G, became known in October 2016. Then the parties signed an appropriate memorandum of understanding. In February this year, the companies agreed on some conditions for the organization of the joint venture. In particular, it was then assumed that the initial annual capacity of the enterprise would exceed 300 PW1100G engines for the Airbus A320neo, and the manpower would be 500 people. EME Aero will be the second joint venture created by Lufthansa Technik and MTU. The companies also own and operate the Malaysian Airfoil Services, which was established in 2003. It is engaged in the repair of low pressure turbine compressors and high pressure compressor blades. Earlier in 2017, Lufthansa Technik had already launched a joint venture XEOS with GE Aviation in Poland's Wroclaw, which originally specialized in servicing GEnx-2B engines, and later extended the range of services to the GE9X engines. The intention of Lufthansa Technik to increase its presence in the aftermarket gas turbine engine market is not surprising - the company has already joined the global Pratt & Whitney engine maintenance network .
