Airline Japan Airlines (JAL) has issued an option to purchase up to 20 supersonic civil aircraft of the American manufacturer Boom Technology .
According to the operator, as part of a strategic agreement with the developer of the aircraft, he also invested $ 10 million in the company and takes part in the modernization of the aircraft design. The Japanese airline will help determine the operational characteristics of the model and the target costs of maintenance, as well as take part in the development of interior design. Boom is developing a new-generation supersonic aircraft that is capable of making non-stop flights up to 8334 km at a cruising speed of 2.2M. It is capable of approximately halving the flight time compared to conventional aircraft. The aircraft is planned to be commissioned in the mid-2020s. In June 2017, British billionaire Richard Branson also invested in Boom Technology, one of the companies of his empire Virgin issued an option for 10 aircraft. Three customers for another 46 aircraft remained unnamed. Air passenger capacity is 55 people. It is created as an advanced competitor of supersonic aircraft Concord. The new aircraft will be able to increase the speed by 10% compared to the Anglo-French car, decommissioned in the early 2000s. The founder of Boom Supersonic, Blake Scholl, said that JAL is going to use such aircraft on the northern Pacific routes. The carrier has previously been interested in supersonic aircraft: for example, in 1963, he issued an order for three Concord, which was canceled after the oil crisis. In addition, the Japanese Aerospace Agency (JAXA) is developing the concept of supersonic and hypersonic aircraft developing a speed of 2.1M. But such aircraft will not enter the market until the mid-2030s .
